Hyphen Window Replacement Project Completed
MARTINSBURG, W.Va. (October 1, 2026) - A long-awaited window replacement and refurbishment project has been completed at the Martinsburg Roundhouse.
The trackside-facing project between the West Roundhouse and the Frog & Switch Shop buildings was funded, in

part, by a $500 Two Rivers Giving Circle Grant awarded in November 2025 by the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation.
The project also was funded by donations received from tourists and private event rentals.
"We can't thank the Eastern West Virginia Community Foundation enough for their support over the years," Berkeley County Roundhouse Foundation President Matt Umstead said.
"The funding we have received for this and previous preservation work has been vital to getting the projects across the finish line." Prior to the 2025 grant award, the Roundhouse Foundation, dba Friends of the Roundhouse, successfully applied for Two Rivers Giving Circle grants for various capital projects for gutter and spouting for the West Roundhouse in 2023 and vandalism-related window repairs in 2021.
The wi
ndow replacement and refurbishment project was awarded to Martinsburg-based Modern Renovations LLC earlier this year.
Built in 1866, West Virginia's 16th National Historic Landmark is considered the finest and most complete example of a mid-19th Century railroad shop complex in the United States.
The original Depot, Engine Houses and Maintenance Shops built at the site in the years leading up to the Civil War were raided in 1861 and then destroyed in 1862 by Confederate troops.
